Daniel recently completed his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta and is currently working towards obtaining his CFA designation. As a Junior Analyst, Intern at KV Capital, Daniel conducts market research on various industries to support the Private Equity team’s portfolio of companies. Daniel manages and organizes data bases of deals, companies, and intermediaries to help streamline the deployment period of KV PE Fund II.

Throughout his time at the University of Alberta, Daniel served as VP, External Relations for the Alberta International Case Competition (AIBC), has represented the University of Alberta in two international case competitions (Continental Trifecta and ICC@M in the Netherlands), and competed twice in the largest undergraduate business competition in Western Canada (JDC West). Daniel values staying active with in his community, and over the last four years, has participated in the Moustache for Movember Foundation and contributed to PIKE Fireman’s Challenge; a week-long university-wide event to raise awareness and funds for burn victims. 

When Daniel isn’t at work or studying for the CFA, he loves maintaining an active lifestyle by working out, enjoying the outdoors, and spending time with family and friends.

Andrew is a second-year accounting student with a passion for private equity. As an Analyst Intern at KV Capital, Andrew will primarily assist with deal flow by assisting in due diligence, market research, and conducting analysis over potential investments. Most recently, Andrew gained valuable experience by working on two private equity cases, one of which was the 2022 KV University of Alberta Case Competition hosted with @UAIC. He looks forward to continuing to hone his skills during his internship at KV Capital.

Andrew is the executive events coordinator for the University of Alberta Badminton Club, and recently volunteered for the UofA 5 Days for the Homeless Campaign to help raise awareness for Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS). When he’s not atwork, Andrew enjoys playing badminton, chess, and listening to podcasts.

Declan is currently completing a Bachelor of Commerce Degree at the University of Alberta and has a passion for all things finance. As a Junior Analyst Intern, Declan will conduct in-depth property and project valuations across various asset classes while working diligently to find ways to structure deals to meet a business's needs. He will also work to analyze projects to ensure they meet the risk profile of our investors.

When Declan is not working, he enjoys hiking in the Rocky Mountains and aspires to travel across the globe. He’s also an avid football fan and would like to compete for the University of Alberta’s Powerlifting Club in 2024.

Zachery’s role as a Junior Analyst on the Commercial Real Estate Finance team entails assisting with reviewing and assessing new loan and equity requests and working closely with the origination team to present financing opportunities and curate positive business relationships. In 2022, Zachery completed an accounting internship in the oil and gas industry, followed by his graduation from the University of Alberta where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce and a Certification in Real Estate. 

In his spare time, Zachery enjoys spending time with family, friends, and his dog Sophie. When he’s not at the office, he is likely catching up on a basketball game or a mixed martial arts match. 

Paul has over 35 years of collective experience in the development and real estate industry, and has provided a high degree of creativity to help raise, manage, and deploy capital through a lens of integrity. An accomplished C-Suite Level Executive, Paul has a proven track record of managing risk and promoting growth. To date, he has structured over $500M in equity and arranged over $1B in debt. Paul’s tenure at Anthem United, and its predecessor company, United Communities—a real estate development company focused on the development of residential properties in Alberta and California—began in 1992 where he served as CFO from 1997 until 2018. During that time, he helped guide the company through an IPO, a subsequent privatization, and its dramatic expansion that followed. In 2015, he assisted in the sale of the company and stayed on board to focus on supporting the transition over the course of the next four years.

At KV Capital, Paul provides mentorship and training to the commercial real estate finance business development team regarding relationship management, deal structuring, and market knowledge. He continues to serve as an experienced support mechanism to promote efficiencies and help improve processes and technology tools to accelerate growth.

Paul believes it is vital to support the success of team members and foster relationships on the foundation of trust and honesty. When Paul’s not working, he enjoys hiking with his wife—whether in the Foothills and Canadian Rockies, or on the trails of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California.

As Manager of Finance and Accounting, Marissa is responsible for the maintenance of day-to-day accounting records as well as reviewing and presenting financial reporting packages. Bringing over seven years of experience to the team, Marissa works alongside the CFO and business unit leads to complete the budgeting function, develop and monitor performance objectives, understand and mitigate key risks in the organization, and provide direct supervision and mentorship to junior accounting staff.

Prior to joining KV Capital, Marissa was a financial controller at an Indigenous-owned not-for-profit organization and an audit manager at MNP LLP. Her diverse background has helped to foster a strong skillset in review and development of internal controls, analysis of complex accounting issues, and preparation of financial statements under various accounting frameworks. Marissa holds her Chartered Professional Accountant designation and is currently an active member of the NAIT Accounting Program Advisory Committee.

In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, reading, and spending time with her family outdoors.

Erick has worked his entire career in partnership with entrepreneurs and private capital leading growth and operational initiatives focused primarily on real estate, construction, and energy services. Most notably, he worked for 13 years in the private equity space as an Operating Partner for a middle market Canadian private equity firm with AUM of $650 million and as CFO for two private equity-backed companies that each grew to run rate revenues of over $300 million. He also has experience working with high-net-worth individuals and family offices, having dedicated over 4 years to building a single-family office and investment holding company for an Alberta-based high-net-worth family.

Erick focuses on helping companies and capital funds develop their overall organizational structure to enable them to scale and generate long-term profitable growth and above market risk-adjusted returns. In his role with KV, Erick focuses on managing KV’s inaugural real estate equity fund—KV Private Equity Partners Fund I LP—along with providing strategic and operational leadership to KV’s Commercial Real Estate Finance team to accelerate its growth. In addition, Erick works with KV’s leadership team on broader strategic initiatives of the organization.

Erick is committed to the community and previously served on the board of Goodwill Industries and the Mental Health Foundation. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for a Calgary-based construction technology company and the Board of Advisors of a Boston-based property technology company. Outside of the office, Erick spends his time with his wife and two teenage daughters, dedicates time to staying mentally and physically fit, and enjoys studying and practicing mindfulness and Stoicism.

As a senior accountant, Lauren is responsible for preparing and overseeing multiple aspects of the finance and accounting functions. She works collaboratively alongside the Controller, CFO, and business unit leads to support financial reporting and forecasting activities. Lauren also works on various projects within KV Capital with the aim to improve efficiency of operations and facilitate growth. Prior to joining the team at KV Capital, Lauren articled in public practice at KPMG LLP serving clients in a variety of industries. During her time at KPMG, Lauren successfully completed all the necessary requirements to obtain her CPA designation and is currently awaiting approval from CPA Canada.

In Lauren’s free time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, traveling to new countries, trying new restaurants, and reading.

In his role as Director of Origination, Ontario, Imtiaz works alongside KV Capital’s Private Mortgages team to originate and structure new commercial lending opportunities. Imtiaz’s passion for commercial real estate combined with his financial background, experience as an owner-operator of a business and extensive contact base, provides him with a strong foundation to understand lender requirements, market conditions, and deliver timely and tailored financing solutions to his clients. Currently based in Toronto, Imtiaz has travelled extensively throughout the province for business as well as leisure (primarily playing hockey) and is knowledgeable across the entire Ontario commercial real estate market.

Imtiaz’s career began in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Toronto audit group. Shortly after receiving his Chartered Accountancy designation, he was selected by his peers to join PwC’s specialized valuation practice. Upon completion of his Chartered Business Valuator designation and promotion to manager at PwC, he left the firm to run his family’s international recycling export business located in Toronto. As President of his family’s recycling business, he grew the company’s sales to several million dollars annually, negotiated deals with both local and international clients and suppliers, oversaw a staff of almost 100 people, and brokered his company’s own financing solutions. Imtiaz also holds both a Bachelor and Master’s degree in Science from McGill University as well as an MBA from University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Business.

Family, community and sports are the pillars of Imtiaz’s life. He has been the Finance Chair for the Entrepreneurs Organization – Toronto chapter, coached and mentored youth playing hockey, and volunteers his time at various community events. Beyond his local travels, Imtiaz has also travelled extensively within North America, Europe, Africa, while always keeping a keen eye on emerging markets and opportunities.

As Analyst, Loan Administration, Erin leverages her customer service background and technical experience to be the first point of contact for KV’s Borrowers and Mortgage Investment Partners. Erin, and the Loan Administration function, serves as the bridge between the various functions of KV Capital, and our clients, as they relate to the private mortgage business and helps to ensure smooth and efficient administration of the mortgage portfolio.

Prior to joining KV Capital, Erin worked within the oil and gas sector in a variety of sales roles, before spending the past four years at home raising her two energetic boys. Outside of work, Erin enjoys travelling, spending time outdoors camping, cooking, and keeping active with a variety of sports.

With over 11 years of industry experience—most recently as an investment banker in New York, Toronto, Montreal, and Calgary—Brad has worked with large public and private corporations, private equity firms, and pension funds to originate and execute in excess of$10 billion USD in North American transactions in the M&A and capital markets. Prior to his investment banking career, Brad’s passion for finance drove him to combine his 7 years of engineer expertise in the oil and gas sector with an MBA from Queen’s University in Ontario.

Drawing from his background in both engineering and financial markets, Brad approaches deals with a unique perspective and provides impactful service, while always maintaining a client-first mindset. Brad has been well recognized for his dedication to clients and always going the extra mile. 

Outside of the office, Brad’s interest in governance and helping out in the Edmonton community led him to being elected as a Director at Large on the Board of Directors of the Winnifred Stewart Association—a charitable organization that enhances the lives of people with diverse abilities. Brad loves to get outside and enjoy Edmonton summers biking in the river valley, golfing, and celebrating the Oilers playoff runs.

As President of Residential Mortgages, Karim focuses on building a new customer experience model that is simple, educational, and interactive, while leveraging best practices and technology to innovate the residential mortgage business unit. He aims to optimize the process between lenders and borrowers to ensure that the highest quality product is delivered within the required timelines.

Karim is an experienced entrepreneur with 30 years of experience in the technology and finance industry. Throughout his career, he has leveraged technology to build and optimize various businesses around the world. Karim has placed a great focus on understanding customer behaviour over the past 10 years, while building and driving businesses in both B2B and B2Csectors. Karim’s passion stems from helping individuals and families achieve their financial goals and attain long-term wealth, which inspired him to obtain his Money Coach certification and join the KV Capital family to further help individuals fulfill their financial aspirations.

In Karim’s spare time, he volunteers for an Edmonton minor hockey league and soccer association and enjoys playing hockey, soccer, and golf.

Ms. Naqvi-Rota has over 30 years of commercial real estate experience and is currently serving as the CEO of Cameron Development Corporation, an Alberta-based real estate development company focused on the development and management of commercial, residential, and multifamily projects. Ms. Naqvi-Rota is also very active in the community, most recently through her engagement with various philanthropic and business organizations including Autism Edmonton, the Alberta School of Business Advisory Committee, and the Norquest College Board of Governors.

Mathew works with the commercial real estate finance team to structure and underwrite debt and equity opportunities for investors, developers, and landlords commercial real estate owners throughout Canada. Over the course of his career, Mathew has been involved in structuring and underwriting over $1B in equity and debt financing opportunities across all asset classes on behalf of private investors, developers, and private equity commercial real estate firms from across Canada.

Prior to joining KV Capital, Mathew worked for a national mortgage advisory, lender and development firm, where he was involved in all aspects of the firm’s operations including strategic investments, deal sourcing and structuring, capital raising, and development management.

Adam structures credit facilities that meet the business needs of our diverse borrower group, while generating risk-adjusted returns to our investors. He has been with KV for six years and prior to joining the team, Adam was the lead portfolio manager for a $2B portfolio of commercial mortgages, including construction, term and bridge debt. Additionally, in his time in the industry, Adam has participated in the structuring, underwriting, and syndication of commercial mortgages exceeding $1B, spanning across all major asset classes. Adam believes that the best deals are those in which the parties find a win-win solution, and he applies this approach to every deal he reviews at KV Capital.

As Senior Director of Asset Management, Andrew’s role focuses on establishing and servicing relationships with professional and institutional investors. These relationships expand KV’s investor base and enhance its ability to bring creative and client-focused financing solutions for its borrowers and partners.

Andrew has 15 years of professional corporate finance experience spanning various roles in investment management, investment banking, and corporate development. After graduating from the University of Alberta with a degree in finance, Andrew spent several years in trading, research, and portfolio management at professional money management firms, followed by a successful career in corporate finance and development at various international energy firms and family office enterprises throughout Canada and the US. A young and growing family brought Andrew back to Edmonton where he now joins the KV Capital team.

In his spare time, Andrew enjoys investing, reading, practicing stoicism, weight-lifting, tennis, mountain biking, and chess.

As President, Real Estate Equity Partners, Darin uses his extensive experience in multiple real estate asset classes and geographic markets to seek out equity investment opportunities with established developers to generate positive returns for fund investors. Darin is an accomplished C-Suite Level Executive and trustee of publicly traded companies in the commercial real estate market, with a strong skill set in governance and DEI. He holds over 20 years of experience growing and diversifying commercial assets across North America, while in tandem co-leading an IPO for a REIT, along with multiple rounds of successful capital raises.

Darin provides visionary and strategic leadership, as well as leadership on execution to drive results – all with an entrepreneurial outlook. He continues to establish meaningful relationships and bring stakeholders and teams together in various settings, including corporations and boards. His skillset also includes extensive knowledge surrounding financial modeling and valuation. Darin believes it is vital to maintain strong community involvement and to foster a lifetime-learning mindset.

In his spare time, Darin enjoys playing and watching hockey, enjoying the outdoors, and spending time with his family.

As COO of KV Capital’s Private Equity team, Matthew delivers against the investment thesis of each portfolio company by ensuring strategic objectives are attained, risks are managed, and budgets and forecasts are robust. He also implements performance management processes that achieve both operational excellence and financial results.

Matthew focuses on finding the right talent, forming optimal organizational structures, and instilling a high performing culture within each portfolio company to enable them to achieve their respective goals.

Additionally, Matthew participates in due diligence on acquisition targets and ensures acquired companies are integrated successfully. Prior to joining KV Capital, Matthew worked in large, multi-national public corporations for over 15 years. Throughout that time, he held various finance, operations, supply chain and organizational transformation leadership roles and delivered numerous projects

As General Counsel, Peter works across all business functions, contributing to strategic and operational planning and execution. He prides himself on providing practical and timely legal guidance with a view to the business needs of the organization and ensuring the enterprise risk management, regulatory compliance, and other critical back-office functions of the organization operate to meet the demands of a scaling business.

Peter has extensive corporate commercial experience gained at a leading national firm and a large Canadian financial institution, with a specialization in private mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, and policy analysis.

As Senior Associate with the Private Equity team, Andrew places a focus on sourcing new opportunities and evaluating potential acquisitions. Over the past three years, Andrew has worked on variety of mid-market deals across Canada and a broad range of industries from technology to energy. Andrew played a key role in supporting M&A transactions and was responsible for performing financial valuation and industry analysis. Prior to his last role, he worked in public practice at KPMG where he received his CPA designation. Andrew is currently a member of the ACG Edmonton Marketing Committee.

As a Senior Underwriter, John works to analyze, value security for, critically assess, and structure all types of commercial mortgage loan applications. He places a focus on valuation, deal structure and loan administration for the Private Mortgages team.

John holds a law degree from Dalhousie University, a BBA at St. Francis Xavier University, and recently completed his MBA at the University of Alberta. Before joining KV Capital, John worked as a tax lawyer at a major Alberta law firm and served as the Assistant Dean of Advancement at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law.

Outside the office, John keeps busy with his young family and tries to stay active by playing recreational hockey and soccer.

Stephanie’s role as analyst, underwriter with the residential mortgages team entails providing a high level of mortgage underwriting expertise and delivering client service excellence on behalf of KV Capital, while simultaneously building long term relationships with lenders and service partners.

Stephanie holds 17 years of tenure in finance. Her education as an accredited consumer residential mortgage lender and past experience within the space of financial institutions such as charter banks, credit unions, mortgage/equipment brokerage, and private capital and alternative lending will allow her assist the KV Capital residential mortgage team with facilitating efficient financing processes while delivering quality service excellence. Over the years, Stephanie has been an integral part of Bay Street firm Paradigm Quest’s Lendwise NPX Alternative Lending division launch in 2016. She has specialized in mortgage underwriting for the past seven years of her career, and is passionate about risk management business process improvement efficiencies and challenged her ACRML diploma for a successful early graduation. Stephanie is a skilled interpersonal communicator and adept problem solver. She takes great efforts to ensure a detailed and accurate approach to her work and embodies transparency and accountability in her business ethics.

Outside of work, Stephanie previously held tenure as a board member with a cat rescue in
Trent Hills, ON. In 2015, she presented a grant application for funding Trent Hills Council with the board and was successfully awarded funding for animal rescue care. Stephanie continues to provide ongoing policy recommendations and fiscal advice to animal advocacy organizations on a volunteer basis.

As Director of Origination, Chris leverages his finance and accounting background to provide a unique perspective to borrowers and lenders to help structure creative financing solutions. Within his role at KV Capital, Chris utilizes his underwriting expertise and industry knowledge to deliver a tailored advisory service to clients. Chris is passionate about helping create an efficient capital structure to help clients achieve their goals. 

Chris previously spent four years with ATB Financial, where he worked in the Real Estate Group and helped manage a portfolio of $750M in senior debt relationships spanning across all asset classes. Outside of work, Chris enjoys spending time with friends with family, enjoying time at the lake or on the golf course, and remaining active.

Vanessa brings a unique, holistic skill set in marketing, communications and public relations to create measurable impact for achieving business goals at KV Capital. She leverages her marketing arsenal to tell brand stories in memorable, engaging and results-oriented ways.

With over eight years of experience, Vanessa brings extensive account management experience at full-service marketing and communications agencies, and has overseen a diverse array of integrated campaigns, for virtually every marketing channel. Vanessa drives strategy, executes tactics, monitors results and provides insightful recommendations for multifaceted projects. She obsesses over brand alignment and continuously keeps a pulse on new ways to leverage thoughtful, cohesive and timely opportunities priorities to build powerful brands and ultimately convert.  

To date, Vanessa has written social media ad copy for a client that has yielded over $100,000 in sales from a $750 ad budget, secured press coverage in virtually every major local media outlet as well as national press including the Financial Post, The Globe and Mail and The Social, and led communications strategies that garnered over $1Min revenue for a small business client. Vanessa’s most recent volunteer experience includes Sponsorship Chair for the Advertising Club of Edmonton(2017-2018), and various other volunteering opportunities including Ronald McDonald House and the Alberta School of Business.

Outside of work, Vanessa enjoys spending time outdoors as well as exploring new travel destinations, food and fashion.

As a senior analyst with the private mortgage underwriting team, Amaan works to analyze value, and structure mortgage investments across numerous asset classes in Canada. Amaan also assists with mortgage administration processes such as advances, payouts, and discharges in a timely manner.

Amaan’s previous experience includes a variety of internships such as: Development Services at the City of Edmonton, KV Capital Private Mortgages, and the Real Estate Team at Alberta Investment Management Corporation. To date, Amaan has been involved in structuring and underwriting loans in excess of $150M. Amaan was directly involved in underwriting and funding one of KV’s first Ontario loans and looks forward to helping KV private mortgages expand their lending platform across Canada.

Amaan completed his Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in finance, with distinction from the University of Alberta. He has also completed the Certificate in Real Estate from the University of Alberta, and recently passed the Level 1 CFA exam. In his free time, Amaan enjoys playing hockey and spending time with his dog.

As senior accountant with the private equity team, Kyle supports the financial reporting and forecasting activities of the private equity fund. He assists fund management's decision making by preparing and reviewing monthly operating reports for the fund and portfolio companies. Kyle also works closely with the portfolio company managers and finance teams to monitor cash flow needs and company performance.

Before joining KV private equity, Kyle articled with PwC Edmonton's Assurance team, where he worked with clients ranging from small owner-operated companies to large multi-national public companies across a variety of industries. He has three years of accounting experience, and is looking forward to bringing his skillsets to KV Capital. Kyle is currently working towards his CPA designation, has completed all requirements and is currently awaiting approval.

Devin develops and creates polished design materials to elevate KV Capital’s brand. He focuses on creating engaging and cohesive content which reflect KV Capital’s values, and conveys these values to internal and external audiences. 

With over 10 years of experience, Devin has worked at a variety of Canadian design agencies as well as large global brands including Rogers Communications, The Toronto Blue Jays and Rakuten Kobo eBooks. When he is not working, you can find Devin vintage shopping, restoring old furniture or hanging out with his cat Siegfried-Laurent.

Michelle’s responsibilities at KV Capital include working closely with all facets of our back-office to ensure investors and other external stakeholders continue to receive the highest quality service and attention. Prior to joining KV Capital, Michelle worked at Bennett Jones LLP as a legal assistant for over five years, where she was a valued member of the corporate commercial practice group, with a focus on supporting their mergers & acquisitions and commercial real estate teams.

She looks forward to bringing her transactional expertise and focus on the client experience to the KV Capital team. Michelle is an avid animal lover who spends her free time with her husband and four rescue animals.  

As the associate director of the private equity team, Anthony supports the finance team’s reporting, forecasting, and planning functions, and is a key developer in KV private equity’s integration of cloud based accounting software and inference tools. While being new to the world of private equity, Anthony brings a background in economics to supplement his accounting skill set. As well, Anthony’s time spent at the University of Alberta included managing the Arts budget of 90M, and he was the key developer of the University of Alberta’s Capital Plan and budget redesign process. Prior to joining KV Capital, Anthony articled in public practice at the PwC Edmonton office. 

Anthony is an avid hobbyist. He enjoys cycling, rock climbing, gardening and reading. When he isn’t working or participating in his hobbies, he can be found running board game nights for his friends.

Shafin sits on both the Board of Directors and Lending Review Committee of the KV Mortgage Fund and the Board of Directors of KV Private Equity. Within his role as CEO and Director, Shafin is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the business including marketing, business development, operation and administration.

Shafin has over thirty years of experience in the finance field and over twenty years of executive management experience. He has previously been on executive teams that were responsible for increasing revenue from $10M to $68M, and net income from $1M to $5.2M, in less than seven years. He has also contributed significantly to creating corporate cultures that have been recognized by the PROFIT 500 Fastest Growing Companies, MacLean Magazine’s Top 100 Employers, Deloitte & Touch’s 500 Fastest Growing Technology Companies and many more.

He is a previous Chair of the Edmonton Aga Khan Grants and Review Board, as well as a previous Board Member of the Ismaili Council for Edmonton. In 2014, Aleem won the Business in Edmonton Leaders of Tomorrow Award.

Outside of work, Aleem enjoys golfing and is a true family man who enjoys travelling and, most of all, watching his three children play hockey and ringette.

Olivia earned her Bachelor of Communications from Grant MacEwan University, and has four years of experience in the industry. She has a background in marketing and strategic communications, and works alongside the marketing team to help elevate KV Capital’s brand through creating eye catching online and internal copy, developing and measuring digital media strategies and reporting on the effectiveness of online activities.

When Olivia is not at work, she is usually traveling or dreaming about travel. Her palette is always ready to try a new dish or experience. Good food, wine, and adrenaline are her sustenance.

Catherine works with the entire KV Capital team to distill and drive strategic marketing initiatives with a focus on impact and growth opportunities. Over the course of her career, Catherine has developed strategic, long-term partnerships with her network and particularly values and credits the mentorship opportunities with business leaders that have influenced her career objectives. When she’s not at work, Catherine is happiest spending time and making memories with her family and loved ones.

Jolly is an Senior Accountant with KV Capital and is responsible for maintaining full cycle accounting records, preparing monthly & quarterly financial reporting packages, assisting in the preparation of the annual audit packages, tracking incoming mortgage investment cash, collaborating with mortgage underwriting staff to maintain accurate mortgage loan portfolio data and assisting on a variety of special projects from time to time. Her love for numbers and involvement in the family accounting practice drove her to become an accountant. When she’s not working, Jolly loves gardening, travelling, and spending time with family.

Jenna is passionate about modernizing the finance function and driving business value through streamlined reporting and process improvements. In her role as the manager of finance and reporting, she helps lead the accounting and financial reporting functions and supports executive decision making. She is also responsible for leading various finance modernization and business process optimization projects to ensure that the finance team is in the best position possible to support the organization as it grows.

Jenna has experience in external audit at an international professional services firm, in addition to providing advisory services to a variety of clients across several industries. Her experiences have allowed her to gain deep insight into the finance function of organizations and the ability to provide best practice solutions for the unique challenges they face. In her spare time, Jenna enjoys being outdoors, reading and practicing photography.

Harpreet oversees and works alongside our chief financial officer on day-to-day finance activities while effectively collaborating with the business units. Her responsibilities include preparing and completing detailed reviews of financial reporting packages on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis. She also prepares and delivers reporting for the board, investors, and borrowers; and reviews all transactions and provides direct supervision to junior accounting staff.

Harpreet has over nine years of accounting experience in assurance and tax, which has allowed her to be an integral part in managing the finance aspect of assets under management and the growth from $100M when she started to $140M. Growing up, Harpreet loved math, it was her strongest subject in school. Later, she started helping her father with accounting and invoicing for his business which led her to the path of pursuing a career as a CPA. Harpreet is a CPA Capstone 1 board panel and CPA tax clinic member. When she’s not working, Harpreet likes to cook and experiment with different recipes. She also likes to travel and go hiking in the mountains.

As the Office Manager, Molly wears a few hats including investor relations, asset management, administration, some IT, a bit of HR, and if you throw in a few office moves and three office builds -- you have her job! Years ago, Molly worked in the office at ReMax St. Albert and eventually as a mortgage associate with TMG.

She has been with KV Capital for ten years, moving from residential mortgages, to private equity and then to commercial mortgages, where she currently deals with mortgage investments. Molly is happiest being outside whether she’s gardening, walking her chihuahuas, or going for a run. She also refinishes and rehabs vintage furniture in her spare time.

Renee joined KV Capital in January 2020 as our chief financial officer. In her current role, she is responsible for overseeing the financial reporting, accounting, finance, treasury, and office administration functions of the company’s private lending and brokerage businesses. Renee plays a key role in developing and implementing financial procedures, maintaining and enhancing the company’s internal controls, and ensuring strict adherence to required compliance reporting. She has over ten years of progressive experience in finance and accounting.

Prior to joining KV Capital, Renee was a senior manager at KPMG LLP, providing audit and business advisory services to clients covering a wide variety of industries, with a focus on entities that are publicly listed on the TSX and/or NYSE. Her specific experience includes leading financial statements and integrated audits, review of internal control testing, and analysis of complex accounting issues. Renee is a volunteer board member and treasurer for a not-for-profit organization with a focus on family literacy (The Centre for Family Literacy). When she’s not working, Renee enjoys spending time with family and friends, including her two daughters, reading, traveling, cooking and trying new recipes.

Mr. Jamie Scott is the Operations Officer and Legal Counsel for Ventura Interests Inc., a private investment firm with interests in traditional and alternative assets throughout North America including residential and commercial real estate developments, structured debt financing, energy and venture capital. Mr. Scott oversees a wide variety of areas within Ventura’s portfolio in his capacity as Operations Officer including operational oversight, oversight of investment managers, deal origination and strategic planning and execution. In his role as Legal Counsel for Ventura Interests, Mr. Scott has responsibility for transactional negotiation and due diligence, amongst other matters. Prior to joining Ventura Interests, Mr. Scott had a successful commercial and corporate law practice with a Vancouver based international law firm, with a specific focus on matters related to commercial real estate and secured lending.

Mr. Harry Kipnes is a serial entrepreneur and corporate executive. With over 30 years experience in business to business and retail sales, Mr. Kipnes is a pioneer in the wireless and telecommunications sectors. As the founder, President and Managing Partner of Digital Communications Group (an Edmonton-based retailer of wireless devices and accessories), Mr. Kipnes was an early adopter of innovative sales and delivery models, successfully expanding the business throughout Western Canada before divesting to Rogers Communications in 2015. An experienced investor and venture capitalist, Mr. Kipnes is the founder and President of Digcomm Investments, a private investment company focusing on various asset classes throughout Canada and the USA. For over 20 years Mr. Kipnes served as committee member and previous Chair of the Cross Cancer CCI Golf Classic, held in support of the Alberta Cross Cancer Institute.

Dr. Nimet Jinnah is the founder and president of Smilemakers Dental Centre, a private dental clinic located in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta where she maintains an active dental practice. She holds a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Alberta where she continues to remain involved in proctoring dental students and has taught as a sessional instructor. Dr. Jinnah is the founder and president of Imarae Corp., a private investment firm and mezzanine lender with experience in multiple facets of commercial and residential real estate assets throughout North America (including hotels, land development and multi-family housing) as well as providing bridge financing to operating companies. An active volunteer, Dr. Jinnah is a participant in Shine Dental Clinic, an Edmonton based dentistry clinic providing free dental services to vulnerable populations.

Mr. Landon Goudreau is a successful entrepreneur and corporate executive. With over 30 years experience in the manufacturing and distribution sectors, Mr. Goudreau has a sophisticated understanding of manufacturing and distribution processes, practices and management techniques. He is currently the President of Endura Manufacturing Ltd., a global manufacturer and distributor of high performance industrial coating products with facilities in Canada, the USA and Australia, where Mr. Goudreau has led several acquisitions and overseen the company’s expansion into new markets. Prior to Endura, Mr. Goudreau was the founder and President of a specialized manufacturer providing services to the Western Canadian oil and gas services industry.

Mr. Nizar Somji is an entrepreneur, corporate executive and board director with a proven track record of growing businesses. He is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of Jaffer Inc., a real estate investment and hospitality company with assets in Canada and the USA. He is the founder and former President and Chief Executive Officer of Matrikon Inc., a leader in industrial intelligence for the oil and gas industry which was acquired by Honeywell in 2010 for $144 million. At the time of its sale Matrikon employed over 600 employees on six continents. A sought after corporate director, Mr. Somji sits on several boards including EPCOR Utilities Inc., Redline Communications, Zafin, Critical Control Energy Services Corp., and the University of Alberta Board of Governors. Mr. Somji holds a Master of Science in chemical engineering from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.

As our director of residential mortgages, it's Shafraaz’s job to oversee the operations and direction of this division, while consistently increasing KV Capital's residential market share. Shafraaz is a licensed mortgage broker who works alongside KV Capital's residential underwriting team, acting as an intermediary between our list of financial institutions and our clients. Throughout his career, Shafraaz has served as the President of Mortgage Advantage Group Inc. and was licensed under Dominion Lending Centres, Brokers for Life for three years. His team was awarded Regional Mortgage Brokerage of the Year in 2019 at the Mortgage Awards of Excellence Ceremony and in 2020, he assisted the team in surpassing $1B+ in mortgage revenue.

In Shafraaz's first year as a Licensed Broker, he secured the preferred Broker position for Westrich Developments. In 2020, he assisted the developer to close $10M in Mortgage volume for Encore Tower. He will remain as a preferred broker for the second tower project, Grandin City, with a total sell out of $78M for 2022. When not working on creating media content, he loves to golf, play hockey and workout.

Derek is responsible for analyzing and assessing real estate lending opportunities to determine their fit in the lending market, preparing loan packages for the full spectrum of third party lenders, working with our business development team to structure deals, and coordinating with lenders to facilitate the funding of loans and address any issues that arise post funding. Whenever he is working on a deal, he takes the clients best interests to heart and strives to provide them with the best possible solution for their project/property.

Derek has over twelve years of experience in the industry, having previously been with Canada Western Bank and Colliers. As a real estate lender with Canadian Western Bank, he managed a portfolio with over $105M in approved loan facilities. Over the past two years with KV Capital, he has been involved in the underwriting and funding of over $57MM in loans to date. During his spare time, Derek enjoys being outdoors golfing, fishing or running as well as spending time with his family and their dog Frankie.

J.D’s role as the director of commercial real estate finance is to grow the CREF division by sourcing commercial real estate lending opportunities in Western Canada, with a focus on the greater Calgary area and Southern Alberta. Throughout his career, J.D. has been an integral member of teams that have raised over $500M in capital for land acquisition. These projects then went on to utilize billions more in phased construction financing over their lives. J.D.’s goal is to find win-win financing solutions for clients by combining his own extensive real estate experience with the deep and diverse bench strength that KV Capital personnel bring to the table.

J.D. was on the developer side of the business for over ten years, so he understands how developers think, what their goals are, and what they are really looking for. Bringing this perspective into the lending world allows him to better serve clients as he has over a decade of first hand experience walking in their shoes. In his spare time, J.D. enjoys exercising, spending time outdoors and with family.

Jesse’s role is about building trust with a borrower and finding them the solution tailored to their needs. This is undertaken through understanding the borrower, the asset, the market and finding the right lender. Jesse oversees the relationship and the solution from start to finish to ensure that results are delivered to the borrower to ensure expectations set out in our first meeting are met.

Jesse enjoys being a part of building a community and working with those that have the vision to create the buildings that make up our neighborhoods and city. Jesse enjoys spending time with family, being on the water, riding down a mountain, enjoying a good meal or sipping a good cocktail when not working.

Don’s career began in 1968, when he joined CIBC’s mentorship program after graduation. He spent the next thirty-eight years with CIBC progressively taking positions of greater responsibility, eventually landing in a senior management position. Throughout this time, he worked in various communities across Western Canada. Don retired from CIBC in 2006, and after a short vacation, transitioned to ATB as a relationship manager focusing on building a portfolio of real estate clients. He focused on building relationships with top quartile clients in Alberta and to some extent, clients from across Canada. He spent ten and a half years at ATB, where he managed a team of forty directors and underwriters for Alberta and grew the portfolio to over $4B.

Don’s a past member of UDI, Chamber, and other various real estate organizations. Don now uses his experience and network to identify new opportunities for KV Capital, as well as provide training and mentorship to team members. In his personal life, Don enjoys time at the cottage, watching sports, golfing, travelling around the world, being with the grandkids, and socializing with friends and associates having discussions on real estate transactions and life in general.

Within his role at KV, Vincent focuses on identifying and leading growth-oriented strategic initiatives with a particular focus on growing KV Capital’s private equity and capital markets businesses.

With fifteen years of industry experience, he has executed and closed numerous M&A transactions ranging from private mid-market businesses to large public company transactions. Vincent has also participated in some of the largest equity and debt capital markets transactions in Canada. Born and raised in Edmonton, Vincent is focused on bringing my broad capital markets and M&A experience to our clients and stakeholders.

Investor Relations/Capital Raising is one of the first points of contacts for investors, with a main focus on building and maintaining strong relationships with KV Capital’s investor base, and bridging the gap between the Finance and IR teams - add in some project management work to the mix and whatever else is thrown her way.

After being at home with her kids for a few years, Nick influenced Elissa to get back into the workforce by telling her about KV Capital and eventually brought her onboard. When not working, Elissa is happiest spending time with her two busy boys and being active, or traveling (when it was allowed).

Michael is the CFO and CCO of our private equity team and portfolio, and has ten years of industry related experience. His responsibilities include overseeing the portfolio companies from a strategic, financial, and operational perspective. He is also involved in acquisition due diligence, financing initiatives, exit planning and M&A.

Michael is happiest reading, playing backgammon and socializing when he is not working.

Michael is a CFA Charterholder, as well as a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA). At KV Capital, Michael works on the deal flow team and his responsibilities include sourcing new opportunities and evaluating potential acquisitions. He also works closely with our portfolio companies in executing key value add projects. When he’s not working, Michael spends his time playing hockey and the trumpet.

Jon leads the operation of KV Capital’s private equity team to form new business partnerships and the leadership of our portfolio companies' to drive growth. Over the past five years, Jon has played an integral role in launching our private equity business. He successfully sourced and completed the acquisition of the businesses in our inaugural private equity fund, and has recently sold two of the portfolio assets and has launched Fund II as of February 2023.

Before joining KV Capital in 2011, Jon worked at Deloitte as a public accountant providing professional services to many different businesses. From the breadth of these experiences, Jon learned the commonalities inherent in successful ventures and how to create win-win outcomes. With this background and his desire to build, KV Capital was a natural fit. When he's not working, Jon enjoys spending time with his wife and three kids, learning new things and exercising.

Ms. Scott is a senior partner in the Edmonton office of Dentons, the world’s largest law firm, where she provides business and legal advice to a range of institutional and corporate clients on real estate and commercial matters. Darlene served as Chair of Dentons Edmonton’s Banking and Finance group for over 10 years and is listed in The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory as a leading lawyer in the field of Banking and Financial Institutions, having been awarded Best Lawyers “Lawyer of the Year” Award in Corporate Law (2014 and 2018), Banking and Finance (2017 and 2020) and Real Estate (2019 and 2021).

Ms. Scott received her King's Counsel designation in 2016 and has served as a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta since 2014, holding the positions of Chair of Audit and Finance, Chair of Credentials and Education, Chair of Conduct and Chair of Policy. She served as President of the Law Society of Alberta in 2021 and currently serves as immediate Past President. Ms. Scott was a recipient of the Alberta Women in Law Leadership “Stronger Together” Award in 2020 and the Edmonton branch of the Commercial Real Estate Women’s inaugural Impact Award in 2020.

Mr. Forbes holds a degree in Economics and Finance from the University of Calgary and is a CFA® Charterholder. He is a licensed member of the Real Estate Council of Alberta and has completed the Mortgage Associates Program. Mr. Forbes joined MCAP’s Development Finance Group in Calgary in 2006 and is currently a Senior Advisor with the firm, responsible for the origination, negotiation, and underwriting of construction loan facilities for a variety of projects, including apartment condominium, purpose built rental, land servicing, commercial, and mixed-use. To date, he has been involved in structuring financing arrangements for over $2.0 billion of real estate transactions throughout Western Canada and has completed syndications with most major Canadian Banks, Alberta based lending institutions, pension funds, and life insurance companies.

Mr. Paulencu is a Chartered Accountant and a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors holding the ICD.D designation.

Mr. Paulencu retired from Deloitte LLP in 2015 where he served as a partner for 31 years having the position as managing partner of the Edmonton office for 10 years.

Mr. Paulencu was an audit and advisory partner serving both publicly traded and private companies primarily in the financial institution and real estate industry sectors.

Mr. Paulencu is currently chairman of the publicly traded company, Athabasca Minerals Inc., and serves as an advisory director on two large privately held companies in the real estate and manufacturing industry sectors.

Mr. Scott holds a Masters of Science in Urban Planning. He is a founding partner of WAM Development Group (now One Properties). He is Past Chairman of the University Hospital Foundation and continues as an Emeritus member.

He is co-chairman of the Brain Center Campaign for the same Foundation. He is a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners and various industry organizations. His business career has centered around real-estate development, mortgage investments in Western Canada and the United States.

Through The Shelley and Guy Scott Family Foundation he is involved in philanthropic interests. He is President of Ventura Interests Inc., a family holding company involved in real estate and mortgage investments.

Mr. Allard holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Alberta and he is the Vice President of Edmonton based Allard Developments. For the last 16 years Mr. Allard has been actively involved in the full cycle execution of residential and commercial real estate development projects within Alberta through Allard Developments and its partners.

Mr. Allard currently focuses on the commercial leasing operations for both the private real estate holdings and new development sites that are managed within the portfolio of Allard Developments. Mr. Allard previously sat as a Director of Calgary based Vero Energy Inc. and he is concurrently serving as a Director of the Vancouver based Highbury Foundation.

As KV Capital’s associate legal counsel, Craig is the junior lawyer on a team immersed in managing a wide variety of legal tasks ranging from regulatory compliance to contract review to due diligence. In addition to the desire to act as a trusted advisor in the local business community, Craig’s passion for law was inspired by his aunt who is a lawyer and who helps individuals in her community with immigration and business issues.

At the beginning of his legal career, he conducted due diligence and contract drafting in an $18M business transaction, and has since built on that experience, focusing on business and corporate finance law. Craig enjoys problem solving, intellectual challenges, and is driven towards lifelong learning and mastering difficult areas of expertise. He’s passionate about outdoor activities such as skiing, snowboarding, surfing, running, hiking, and camping. He also enjoys live music and adding to the list of over twenty countries he has travelled to.

Kelly is responsible for building long term relationships with internal and external partners. Dick Haskayne influenced Kelly to pursue his profession, he made a huge impact on Kelly’s life many years ago which has carried forward to this day. Kelly enjoys spending time with loved one’s when he is not working. 

Mitchell has been involved in most aspects of real estate beginning as a banker and progressing through ownership and asset management, a commercial mortgage brokerage, and finally arriving in private mortgage lending. Mitchell has been a borrower, lender, broker, and advisor throughout his career, and understands a deal from all perspectives to help structure opportunities for success. Over the span of his twenty year career, Mitchell has been involved in approximately $1B worth of transactions.

Within the KV Capital team, he is the first point of contact for brokers and borrowers to discuss their needs for a private mortgage. He is practical in his approach to financing, often providing clients with the flexibility and speed to get deals done in reasonable time frames. Mitchell is the previous Chair of the City of Edmonton’s Non-Profit Housing Corp., and he is the father of two very active kids who are following his passion for skiing and surfing. They can be spotted behind a boat on the Okanagan in the summer and on the slopes in the Rockies in the winter.

As the President of Private Mortgages, Curtis is responsible for the Private Mortgages operation within KV Capital, which includes ensuring that the company is continuously building a robust deal flow pipeline. Curtis works closely with mortgage brokers and borrowers, and leads the KV Private Mortgages team to offer competitive and private loan structures, as well as to deliver on the dual investment objectives of capital preservation, and providing consistent returns to investors.  Curtis holds a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in accounting, and is a Chartered Accountant.

Curtis has spent a total of 20 years in the financial services industry, and has experience in numerous businesses including reinsurance, energy and private lending. His progressive development in the industry has led to a variety of accomplishments, with the most notable being his participation and leadership in the growth of KV Capital from approximately $35M in assets under management to $150M in assets under management. Curtis places a great importance on going the extra mile to understand KV Capital’s borrowers’ real estate projects and financing needs, following through on commitments, and providing high quality service in everything he does. When he’s not working, Curtis spends his time learning,  playing sports, coaching youth soccer, and spending time with his wife and their four boys.

Colin leads the Private Mortgages team, including Origination, Underwriting and Loan Administration team. He delivers financing solutions for KV Capital’s borrowers and manages mortgage investments for our investors. Colin has participated in underwriting and structuring over $3B of commercial real estate loans of all asset types across Western Canada, and has managed over half a billion dollars of mortgage investments on behalf of KV Capital’s investors. He was also the champion for KV Capital’s Salesforce system implementation (2019) and is the program leader for KV Capital’s pre-approved CPA training program.

Colin holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (with distinction) from the University of Alberta. He is a Chartered Professional Accountant and a CFA® Charterholder, and was the recipient of the 2014 Dzurko National Honour Roll for performance on the Chartered Accountant program final examination.

In his personal life, Colin serves on the Board of Directors for HomeEd, a city-owned corporation providing quality, affordable housing for residents of the City of Edmonton. He also enjoys spending time outdoors with his family whenever he can, especially paddling in a canoe, hiking up a mountain, or water skiing behind a boat.

As Director, Loan Administration, Mat leverages his finance and accounting background, and experience in all aspects of the private lending business, to support the loan servicing and administration team and provide exceptional service for borrowers and mortgage investors. Mat is passionate about optimizing processes and finding efficiencies to help add value and simplicity to borrowers and mortgage investors.

Mat obtained his CPA designation in 2017 and has over five years of experience in the financial services industry, with three years focusing on public practice accounting. His most recent role working at ATB Financial with the Real Estate Group entailed managing a portfolio of $600M in senior debt relationships spanning across all asset classes throughout Alberta. Outside of work, Mat enjoys spending time with his growing family, spending time outdoors, and watching basketball with friends.

As an associate with the Private Mortgage underwriting team, Tyler works to assess risks, structure deals, and support the firm’s private lending operations. Tyler is a Chartered Professional Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with distinction from the University of Alberta. He has always had a passion to pursue a career in finance and real estate, and enjoys the opportunity of adding value for a wide range of stakeholders. To date, Tyler has been involved in structuring and underwriting mortgage loan investments in excess of $250M.

In his spare time, Tyler enjoys playing golf and is an avid sports fan. He is also a travel enthusiast having previously visited numerous areas within North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. He hopes to continue his journey across the globe.

As a Senior Analyst, Paul works to analyze, value and critically assess properties in a variety of different asset classes across multiple provinces. Additionally, he provides the same valuation assessment towards our borrowers and works to marry the two within the risk profile outlined by the firm. His decision to join the underwriting profession came from his interest in valuations and deals work. Paul has received his CPA designation, and is currently pursuing his CFA and has successfully completed the first two levels.

When he is away from work, Paul is happiest spending time with his friends and family outdoors. In the summer, this means spending a significant amount of time on the golf course or at his family's cottage. During the winter months, he enjoys spending time skiing or at the outdoor rink.

As our Executive Vice President & Managing Partner of Asset Management, Nicholas provides overall leadership and oversight of fund formation, capital raising activities and client relations. Nicholas holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Political Science and a juris doctor degree from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law.

Prior to joining KV Capital Nicholas practiced corporate and commercial law at a leading national law firm where he specialized in private M&A, capital markets and commercial real estate. He is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Alberta Securities Commission Exempt Market Dealer Advisory Committee and is a co-founder of Young ACG Edmonton.

Marc has twenty years of full cycle experience in the Canadian mortgage banking and brokerage industry that has included first hand expertise in underwriting, originating, adjudicating, servicing, account management and default management. He also has experience in structuring and sourcing various debt and equity structures including pari-passu loans, A/B loans, club deals and structured finance deals and has been involved in aggregate debt transactions topping $3B.

Within his role at KV Capital, Marc is responsible for overseeing and supporting the commercial real estate financing group and providing strategic direction to take advantage of new opportunities in our markets, as well as providing leadership and experience to our business development group in providing commercial real estate financing solutions to our clients. Marc has spent seven years on the KV Mortgage Fund Board, including Chair of the Lending Review Committee, and was previously a contributing member of AMBA, Mortgage Loans Association and UDI. Marc has always had a passion for real estate and specifically city building – he loves Alberta and takes pride in watching our great cities in Alberta grow and progress. When he’s not working, Marc is happiest doing anything relating to hockey, pursuing his passion for fly fishing, and discovering the real estate market elsewhere when he travels.
